Virtual Sunday School Week 34

OBJECTIVE:

It is easy to be jealous of someone else. When have you been jealous? The disciples were jealous of others sharing Gods love. Jesus said that it is okay to be jealous but we all have to work together in order to grow Gods kingdom.

KEY PASSAGE:

Mark 9:38-50

SUMMARY:

In Mark 9:38-50 the disciples—at least John—are upset because they saw somebody, not a disciple, “casting out demons” in Jesus’ name. Here John sounds strikingly similar to the Pharisees, who became upset when someone out of their control, Jesus, healed a person on the sabbath (Mark 3:1-6).

Virtual Sunday School Week 33

OBJECTIVE:

Today the kids will ask “What does it mean to be Last?” We are told again and again that we need to be the first, that we need to be the best. But when the disciples ask this question, Jesus has an answer that they do no expect.

KEY PASSAGE:

Mark 9: 30-37

SUMMARY:

Each Sunday we stand before the passion of Jesus Christ, yet we are no better than the original disciples in thinking that we need to be the best. When Jesus talks to a little child, the disciples do not expect this to happen. Jesus tells them (and us) that we need to be like the vulnerable child whom we welcome into our midst through the word and the meal.

Virtual Sunday School Week 32

OBJECTIVE:

The kids will ask themselves the question “Who is Jesus?” and learn about ways we address Jesus.

KEY PASSAGE:

Mark 8:27-38

SUMMARY:

This story provides the turning point in Mark’s gospel. Peter is the first human being in the narrative to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, but he cannot accept that as the Messiah Jesus will have to suffer. Moreover, Jesus issues a strong challenge to all by connecting discipleship and the cross.
